[left-post]
We all have been using the same kind of technique for keyword research and writing articles for a very long time.
The problem is, what we’re doing isn’t 100% effective and we still don’t know it.
Today I’m going to talk about a special term called as Keyword Difficulty Analysis and how to use Keyword Difficulty tool to ease our Keyword Research work.
Before that let me address, the usual way of doing Keyword Research and why you’ve been doing it wrong all the while.

  • Keyword Research for High Volume, Low Competition and Good CPC Keyword.
  • Search for effective LSI (Latent Semantic Index) keywords.
  • Write articles with keyword in Title, URL, Meta Description, Image Alt Tags, Set Keyword Density to over 1% and sprinkle some LSI keywords.
  • Share article on social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Reddit, StumbleUpon, and every other popular social network.
  • Initiate proper interlinking, build backlinks via dofollow comments, Guest Post and other personalized techniques.
  • Later pray for article to rank.
If you were doing what I mentioned above and wish your article to somehow rank on Page 1 of Google, then let me tell you my friend, all you have been doing ever since is taking a shot on a foggy day.
Even if you did rank and later call yourself a pro-blogger by applying above mentioned steps, you have been doing it all wrong ever since.
Why?
Because…
You have been missing a very crucial step in start of your Keyword Research.
That crucial step is Keyword Difficulty Analysis!

What does Keyword Difficulty Analysis mean?

keyword difficulty analysis
Keyword Difficulty takes into account number of things like;

  • How many pages are currently ranking for a Particular Keyword?
  • How many pages are Bidding in that Keyword in Paid Search (PPC Campaign)?
  • How expensive are the clicks? and volume for that term in a month.

In layman’s term, Keyword Difficulty means…“It is a factor that tells us how easy or difficult it is to rank for a particular keyword.”
For example if you’re trying to rank for keyword like ‘best dog food for chihuahua in Arizona’ then even with couple of internal links you’ll be able to rank as its highly personalized and local search.
But
What if? You’re trying to rank for keyword like ‘nike running shoes
It will be very difficult, because most places will taken up by ecommerce sites and high authority blogs which have either reviewed or promoting ‘nike running shoes.’
And when it comes to normal blogs like yours and mine, it would to tough even to book a place in 5th page, isn’t it?
Don’t worry as I will be teaching you how to find keyword difficulty, how to use keyword difficulty tool to do it effectively and never waste your efforts to rank a keyword.

Before that it’s important to know what Strong Results and Weak Results mean.
Consider if you’re in tech niche, you search for ‘iPhone 6 Review’; it’s very obvious that the first 10 results will be taken up high authoritative blogs which are very hard to compete with.

free keyword difficulty analysis
If sites like Wikipedia, Wiki how, Mashable, Techcrunch, Engadget, Macrumors and other established tech sites rank in Top 10, then you should get a hint that it will be very hard to outrank these sites.
Such type of SERP results are called as Strong Results and it’s very hard to compete with them.
Whereas if you search for a long tail keyword as seen in image below and majority results are from forums, amateur/unprofessional YouTube Videos, Yahoo Answers, Quora and similar user-generated or non-relevant sites then it’s fairly easy to outrank them.

weak results
The content on these sites is user-generated which usually Google sees as having less authority and trust factor are called as Weak Results.
Now that we’ve talked in brief about Strong & Weak Results and Keyword Difficulty, let us now get into the science of Keyword Difficulty analysis.
I’ve cropped Keyword Difficulty Analysis using specialized Keyword Difficulty tool in three different methods.
Let’s Start!

Method 1 – Using Special Google Operators for Keyword Difficulty Analysis

For normal consumers and information seekers Google is just a gateway or a simple input field where they type-in queries and search for what they want.
For bloggers like us, it’s more than just a search engine; it’s a powerful tool that helps us analyse our competition.
Let us see how can we use Google as a Keyword Difficulty tool and analyse competition to rank for a keyword.
Using Google Keyword Planner, I’ve taken a dummy keyword which has fairly good amount of search, low competition and good CPC.
(When Google Keyword Planner shows Low Competition for a keyword, then it usually regarding people advertising for that keyword irrespective of organic results)
The keyword I’ve selected is ‘protein rich food’ which has 8,100 monthly search, Low Competition and CPC for $3.12.
Fire up your Chrome Browser in Incognito Mode and go to Google.com.
(Incognito mode avoids returning personalized results like News, Images, Youtube Videos, Ads and so on which Google displays after collecting our search data and preferences. This helps us get a generic ranking.)
Secondly open up an excel file or Google Spreadsheet and create five columns.
Fill the columns as Keyword, Total Results, Results with allinurl, Results with allintitle and lastly Results with allintext. (Refer image below)

excel spreadsheet
I’ll explain what these terms mean just as we move on.
Now do a basic search (in incognito mode) for the keyword ‘protein rich foods’ and write the total returned results under ‘Total Results’ column in your spreadsheet.
keyword difficulty analysis for total results
Once you fill the first two column, we’re now going to use special operators to make the best use of Google as a Keyword Difficulty Tool. These special operators are

  1. allinurl – Displays all results with keyword appearing in URL.
  2. allintitle – Displays all results with keyword appearing in Title.
  3. allintext – Displays all results with keyword appearing inside the article.
Search now using these special search operators one by one as shown below:
‘allinurl: protein rich foods’, note the number of results containing ‘protein rich foods’ in URL and enter in into the spreadsheet under ‘Results with allinurl’ column.

keyword difficulty analysis for results with allinurl
‘allintitle: protein rich foods’, note the number of results containing ‘protein rich foods’ in Title and enter it into the spreadsheet under ‘Results with allintitle’ column.

keyword difficulty analysis for results with allintitle

‘allintext: protein rich foods’, note the number of results containing ‘protein rich foods’ inside article and enter it into the spreadsheet under ‘Results with allintext’ column.

keyword difficulty analysis for results with allintext
At the end your excel spreadsheet is going to look something like this.
excel spreadsheet
You can do the same with your sub-keyword and LSI keywords.
What’s the purpose of our collected data?
According to my experience, keywords with than or nearby ‘Total Results’ of 1,000,000 has good possibility for ranking on the 1st Page.
If ‘Results with allinurl’ and ‘Results with allintitle’ are less than or nearby 1000 then you have high chances of ranking on the 1st page with a 2000+ words in-depth blog post, proper image optimization, High Flesch Reading Score (read point #4), Quick Load Speed, Good Social Shares, Efficient Inter Linking and several high DA, PA Backlinks.
I’d suggest to not try for a keyword where ‘Results with allintext’ is 50% more than the ‘Total Results’. In our case the percentage is 460%, so it’s better to avoid working on this keyword.
To get more information regarding sites that pull up in the Top 10 Results like Domain Authority, Page Authority, Backlinks, PR, Domain Age and so on, I’d suggest you use a Chrome Extension called as SEOQuake.

If you have doubts regarding this technique, do leave a comment below in-case you don’t forget it later.
Moving on to next method i.e. the second Keyword Difficulty Tool.

Method 2: Using a specialized Keyword Difficulty Checker

I usually prefer the first method as I personally get to know the look and feel of my competition, visit the blog posts and see what each author has to say about a particular topic.
But if you’re really isn’t that patient let me introduce you to a true Keyword Difficulty tool called as Keyword Inspector.
Keyword Inspector is a free Keyword Difficulty Analysis tool used to analyse difficulty in ranking a keyword.
It is a product of Learn2Rank.com and does keyword difficulty analysis for you.
Once you create an account with Learn2Rank and are logged into Keyword Inspector, follow the steps below to make best use of this Keyword Difficulty Tool.

  • Put your keyword in the input box (in our case ‘protein rich foods’) and select the country.
  • Search results differ intensively depending on your country you’re targeting. Google usually ranks ecommerce sites, blogs, and websites within or closely related to that country.
  • Once you’re done, click on Submit and let Keyword Inspector do rest of the work for you.
  • In the screenshot below, Keyword Inspector shows that it is VERY DIFFICULT to rank for our chosen keyword, so it’s better to not even looking at it.
Keyword Inspector keyword analysis tool
Keyword Inspector ranks keyword on a base of Very Easy, Easy, Moderate, Difficult and Very Difficult.

As per my experience with this Keyword Difficulty tool, I’d recommend to attempt for keywords with moderate and less difficulty.
Keyword Inspector displays the Top 10 results ranking on Google for that keyword and displays average Links/Page, average URL Pagerank, Average Moz Rank, Competition Score and Difficulty.
If your chosen keyword has score 40 and less then it will be easy to rank for it.
Do take this tool’s results with a pinch of salt because for a keyword if it shows Very Difficult to Rank in USA, might show Very Easy to rank in India due to different demography and people’s needs.
If you have any questions or doubts regarding this Keyword Difficulty Tool then leave a comment below before you forget and later continue reading ahead.
Moving on to Method 3…

Method 3: Keyword Difficulty tool for Mommy’s and Daddy’s as well as for Pro Digital Marketers

Well if you don’t want to go the extra distance for Keyword Difficulty Analysis or supposedly not interested in knowing the extra details.
In short if you’re SEO noob who’s a house-wife mommy or a corporate tie-hauling worker and just don’t need the hangover of huge details of SEO mumbo-jumbo required to rank a keyword, if you don’t have the time to check each and every keyword slowly and steadily and just want to drop all your main keyword, sub keyword and LSI keywords and do Keyword Difficulty Analysis, this next tool is perfect for you.
The tool I’m talking about is a professional SEO tool for digital marketers called as SEMrush.
SEMRUSH recently introduced a new Keyword Difficulty Tool to bulk check difficulty in ranking multiple keywords.
Once you’re registered into SEMRUSH using its 14-day FREE Trial Period, see the Left Panel in SEMRUSH dashboard and look for Tools.
Under Tools you’ll have Keyword Difficulty Tool.
Click on it and you can enter maximum of 100 keywords per line and search their Keyword Difficulty.
The tool will display your difficulty in ranking a keyword and grade it based on percentage.
In our case, the keyword we’ve chosen has monthly volume of 8,100 and 85% Difficulty which means the keyword is very hard to rank.

semrush keyword difficulty tool
In SEMRUSH Keyword Difficulty tool, keywords which have 60% or less competition can be ranked for 1st page of Google.
If you’re a Professional Digital Marketer or an Amateur Blogger, I’d recommend you using SEMrush as it is a Swiss Army Knife for Bloggers, Internet and Affiliate Marketer.
It helps me do 4-jobs-in-1 i.e. find Keyword Difficulty, Keyword Research, Competitors Analysis and helps finding Backlink Opportunities. You may want to read complete SEMrush review.
If you really want to save the trouble from jumping one tool to another for your SEO needs, SEMRUSH is just for you.
I believe this 3rd Method isn’t as complicated as the above two. Still if you have any doubts regarding this tool, do let me know in the comments section.
I believe I was able to put forward a very new and exciting topic in front of you.
Finding Keyword Difficulty for your potential keywords you want to rank for helps you determine which keyword can be actually ranked if you’re a normal blogger just like me.
I do have invested a lot of time to put forth an informative and detailed post in front of you, so even if you did understood everything, I’d request you to leave a comment below regarding the article.
Let me know if you use some other techniques different or similar than mine for analysing competition for your potential keywords.
Did you ever wonder why some sites rank for terms and queries even if they have written it at a later date and have less information than you? This is where domain authority comes into play. Domain authority not only helps you to rank for keywords but also makes your site appear authorities to search bots that means whatever you write is considered important. And this indirectly means more followers, more sponsored post requests, and more value of your blog.
If you wanted to know how to increase your domain authority, this is where you will get it all. In this post, I will explain all you need to take care while thinking to improve your DA. But before taking you for an information splash let me explain the core concept of domain authority.

What is Domain Authority?

Domain authority is a logarithmic score (ranging from 0-100) by Moz, which predicts how well a domain (webpage) will rank in the search engine results. It’s based on a number of other factors like moz rank, moz trust, social signals, linking root domains, total backlink profile, user experience, site loading time, traffic etc.
Domain authority is a logarithmic score meaning scoring a DA of 30 from 20 is easier than getting it to 90 from 80. Often authoritative sites like Wikipedia, Facebook and Google itself enjoy the ultimate DA score of 100. But that doesn’t mean sites with DA 50-90 are considered inferior.
It is a comparative value which means your site might see a degradation of domain authority if it is not updated or does not hold the quality signals true.

Domain Authority Vs Page Authority

Domain authority must not be confused with page authority which is a completely different metric. While domain authority gives you the ranking of the site as a whole, page authority is the score of that single page in question.
Domain authority is constant across the whole site but page authority changes across sub-domains of the same root domain.

Domain Authority Factors

Domain authority shows how strong your site is as compared to others in SERPs rankings. It has nearly dozens of factors that are considered while calculating DA so it is hard to influence DA with just concentrating on any one factor. Here is a complete guide on how to increase your domain authority. I have explained the factors that are the key players in deciding the DA of a site.
Domain authority is calculated on the basis of so many factors out of which the following play a vital role and is in our control:
  1. Linking root domains: Domain authority is highly dependent on the number of domains (or sites) linking to you. It means getting a 100 links from one domain in no better than getting 50 links from 50 different domains. It looks for how many sites are linking to your site and that indirectly helps to increase the value of your site.
  2. Moz Rank: Mozrank of a website is based on its link profile and ranges from 0-10; the higher the better. Mozrank emphasizes quality backlinks meaning a few link backs from high quality sites is considered better than a large number of backlinks from poor quality sites.
  3. Moz trust: Moztrust  is like mozrank but it focuses on your proximity with authority links. Moztrust checks how well you have connections and networks with trusted websites. If a website linking to you is being linked to any authority site you are benefitted.
Suppose site A has linked my article on domain authority in its blogging resources post. And this post is linked by some authority sites like a .edu site or search engine journal it’s my site that gets a bump in moztrust.
  4. Quality content: Quality content is the key to any rakings in the SEO world. When you write quality content, your tends to rank more, which means more people will be linking to it. This indirectly means a rise in your authority and ultimately in your DA.
  5. Social signals: This one is also a factor related to increase your site’s domain authority. By social signals, it means the total number of shares and likes your articles get in social platform.
Take it this way, when people share your content across social media it means they like the article which was helpful to them. This means your site should be considered authority.
  6. Search engine friendliness: With SEO, your site will appear in the SERP for search queries more frequently. This means more people will read it and thus your authority increases.

How To Increase Your Domain Authority?

increase domain authority

Domain authority is very essential in terms of having your search engine rankings. If you have a domain authority that is very less, say 10-20 you wouldn’t be ranking well for your focused keywords. In the same way having a better DA score can do well if you are looking for more authority and you rank for more terms. This indirectly means you get better monetization offers through paid posts.
If you want to increase domain authority, you need to keep the following points in mind.
1) Earn links from more sites:
Link building is always considered wrong but you can earn links for you. As “the number of root domains linking” is a major factor to boost your domain authority, try to get more and more sites linking to you.
Writing helpful content and case studies that help your audience can get you more backlinks than just writing random stuff. Here are 2 guides to earn organic backlinks to your site, the right way.

2) Start marketing your content:

Content marketing is the new game in the blogging world. You need to market your content to increase its reach. The more eyes on your content, the more will it help the readers and hence more link backs, more social shares and more authority. Read below guides to getting started in content marketing.

3) Not only diversification, you need a clean link profile:

While having a variety of sites linking to you might seem lucrative at first, they always are not in good terms with standard search engine optimization practices. You need to put a check to spammy and very low-quality sites linking back to you. This also applies to the forums and community link backs that Google considers improper.

Do not indulge in improper SEO practices like buying links, site wide link ads, or linking from low-quality sites.

If at all you fall prey to a negative SEO attack, and too many low-quality sites link to you, disavow them. You need to regularly check your Google Webmaster tool for seeing who is linking to you.
4) Build a well-planned internal link structure:

Internal links are said to have occurred when a link in an article takes you to another related article within the same site. In other words, interlink all your posts to have better on page SEO and finally an improved domain authority.

Here are certain points to keep in mind while internal linking.

1) Use a variety of anchor texts. Do not overuse a given anchor text and do not use exact anchor texts.
2) Set an optimum number of links within a post.
While internal linking an article, beware you don’t interlink too many posts so that the number of links on a given page rises reasonably. Try to maintain a balance between your external links and internal links within a page.

To quote Google on how many links we should have per page,
When we thought about how many links a page might reasonably have and still be under 100K, it seemed about right to recommend 100 links or so. If a page started to have more than that many links, there was a chance that the page would be so long that Google would truncate the page and wouldn’t index the entire page.
So, it would be better not to overload a page with too many internal or external links whatsoever.

5) Write epic content and nothing less than that:
When you want to prove your authority, you need epic content that no one can beat. Epic content in the sense; content that provides value to the readers.
You need to write posts after reading which your reader might not wander anywhere else for the same problem. Avoid duplicate content issues. If you have a post that is somewhat similar to an existing one or is an updated version of it, use the rel=”canonical” feature to point out search engines to the original source of the article.
Use Google trends and buzzsumo to find topics that are trendy and in demand. Then write a relevant and detailed post on it. If you cannot write on a topic that is new, simply take up any article that has good rankings but has chances of improvement and then apply Brian Dean’s skyscraper technique to rob him of his rankings.
The final say here is to prove your authority no matter what.

6) Off page SEO:
In order to have positive search engine optimization you need to have proper off page SEO too. The major points your off page SEO strategy should include is:
  1. Guest posting: Guest posting for link building is dead. But it has far more benefits than just link building. You get tons of eyes on your skills, increase reach of your content, and can prove your authority in the niche; all through guest blogging. Read here about guest blogging concept in details.
  2. Social bookmarking sites: Social bookmarking sites will help your content reach audiences beyond your readership. This means global viewers and more readers. It will surely improve your domain authority as these readers would reshare your content (remember you have to make them share through your epic content). Read how to do social bookmarking.
  3. Blog commenting: Blog commenting is a great way to get more link backs to your site. It has many more benefits like stealing your competitor’s readership with your thoughtful and relevant comments. Here are some more tips on increasing more comments on your own blog.
7) Social media optimization:

When you are wise you wouldn’t want to put all your eggs in one basket. Having total dependency on search engines would be foolishness. In fact, social media can give you referral traffic and brand value too.
Use social media to market your content and reach more audience. The more the people affected with your writing, the more the authority of your articles.
Get people to share your content by writing great content. Also use sharing buttons for making social sharing a cake walk for your readers. You can also try paid advertising in order to reach more dedicated readers.
Being active on social media can also help you brand your blog which will indirectly increase your fan following. Increasing fan count is directly proportional to your authority. You may be interested to read these two awesome articles from this blog:

8) Increase user friendliness of your site:

All SEO, every social plugin and even awesome content, everything is nothing without your readers. If you want readers to your site, you have to make your site user friendly.  No one would like a site that loads for ages. Keep your site load time under 2-3 seconds or even lesser.
Do not jam-pack your site with ads that pop up every now and then. And increase white space by removing clutter off your site.

9) Have patience, let your domain grow:

Domains don’t grow, at least not lengthwise. You need to age them. Keep working on your site patiently and you will see your rankings improving with time. You can use this domain age checker tool by Webconfs to check your or other’s domain age.

How To Check Your Domain Authority?

You can check your domain authority by using the official toolbar from moz. Alternatively, you can calculate your domain authority by going to opensiteexplorer.

How To Get Ranked Number 1 On Google

businessman questioning himselfThe big question that every business owner asks is how to get ranked number 1 in Google for their keywords. I could answer that question in a simple manner, but it would be vague and leave you frustrated. So, this explanation is going to be a bit long.  Pay close attention and take notes, because this is accurate information that really works.
Here you go: In order to understand what you have to do to get to number one on Google, you really have to understand two different things.
First you need to understand what factors Google uses to determine which page should rank there.  Then you have to understand the reason behind why the page that is ranking there right now is ranking that high. So it really boils down to understanding Google and understanding your competition.

Understanding Google Rankings

I am not going to claim that I know every last detail about Google’s ranking algorithm. I certainly do not. Neither does anyone else who doesn’t work very high in the Google algorithm engineering team. They are the only ones who know every factor. Besides that, the ranking factors change over time anyway. The methods that work today might not work as well tomorrow. You probably have already learned that the hard way.

get ranked number one on googleWhat I can tell you is that I do understand the most important factors for getting a page to rank high right now. There are a handful of critical factors and then there are many other less critical ones. I will share a few of the more critical factors. I learned these factors after studying the academic papers published by the top people at Google and through years of trial, error and experience.

Before you consider the individual factors that you can change with your website, stop for a moment and think about what Google is trying to do by ranking the search results the way that they do.  They are trying to show the searcher exactly what he or she is looking for.   They are trying to show the searcher the most relevant pages Google can possibly find.  Whenever possible, Google also wants to show the searcher the most popular pages on those topics.  And, they want those pages to be at least reasonably high quality.   All of the analysis that Google conducts is done in their effort to determine relevancy, popularity(authority) and quality.

If you want your page to rank high, then you want to convince Google that your page is highly relevant for that search phrase, your page & your website are popular and your page is high quality.
More relevant = higher rankings
More popular = higher rankings
Maintaining high quality usually = high rankings

Google claims to take over 200 factors into consideration when determining their rankings.  This may very well be true.  However, we know from experience that certain things matter more than others.  There are a handful of things you can really focus on that will make huge differences in the way your page ranks.   The other factors are less important in the grand scheme of things.

The Six Most Important Factors That Influence Your Rankings

6 Most Important Ranking Factors for Google1)       Page Title
2)      Words on the page
3)      Keywords in the URL
4)      (Domain Links) Links to your website as a whole (number and quality of links matter)
5)      (Specific Page Links) Links pointing directly at that page (quality, number, anchor text and Google PageRank of links matter)
6)       Avoiding Google’s quality filters that filter out low quality pages and low quality websites
More about those factors:
1)       Page titles – The page title matters a lot because, in general, the title of a page is going to be a fairly accurate description of what the page is about.   So if you are targeting a specific keyword phrase with a specific page, make sure you use that keyword phrase in the page title html.  That makes a huge difference.  Your page title should be at least three words long and should also have the words in the right order if you want maximum impact.
2)      Text on the page – The second thing you have control over that makes a huge difference is the text on the page.  Search engines can read words pretty easily.  If you have a page with at least several hundred words on it, then it is pretty easy for a search engine to tell what that page is about.  Google simply counts the number of times each important word or each important phrase appears.  They drop all the generic words like “a, an, the, so, if, are, at, etc.”   But, they count the other nouns, verbs and adjectives on the page.  The more times a word or phrase appears, the more likely Google is to think that the page is about that word or phrase.    For instance, if the phrase “search engine optimization” is mentioned several times in different spots on your page, then that page is more likely to be about search engine optimization.  I wanted this page to rank high for a certain phrase which is why I included the phrase “how to get ranked number 1 on Google” and other phrases that are closely related to that inside the main body of content on this page.  Just doing that one simple thing will help the page get ranked on page one in Google and probably pretty high up there for that specific phrase.
3)    Keywords in the URL – The third thing that you have control over that makes a huge difference in ranking is whether or not your keywords appear in the URL structure for the page.  If you are trying to get a page to rank for a specific phrase, then it helps to have that phrase (or even just the most important words) appear in the URL.  For instance, in the last example that I gave for this page, it helps me to have the words “get ranked number 1 Google” appear in the URL – http://thewebsitepromoter.com/how-to-get-ranked-number-1-on-google/
I could have shortened that to be http://thewebsitepromoter.com/ranked-number-1-google/ instead of also including the words “how – to – get” and the word “on”.   Sometimes it does help to keep the URL shorter.  In this case there isn’t a big difference.  If the phrase was much longer than this, then I should have shortened it to just have the most important  words in the URL.   You also want to make sure that you have those words in the right order as they would appear when the person is typing them.   Having them in the right order is important because if the words are in a different order, it might suggest that the page is about something entirely different.

inbound hyperlinksAbout links –

Google cares about links because it looks at them as if they were votes between websites and web pages.  One webpage can vote for another one by linking to it.  Links are not all created equally though.  Certain links are far more influential.  Some links can really move your ranking higher while other links don’t seem to move it at all.  A link is considered high quality from an SEO standpoint if that link has more potential to influence your rankings.
What kinds of things are likely to influence a link’s quality?

  • How much Google PageRank the page has that the link originates from matters.  Higher Google PageRank means the page is considered more important and more influential by Google.  You can read more about Google PageRank here if you don’t know what it is.

  • How many other links are there on the page and where do they link out to.  Are they good sources of relevant information or are they low quality or even spam?

  • Where is the link positioned on the page it comes from?   Is it in the main body of text on the page?  Is it in the sidebar?  Is it in the footer?   Where is the link positioned within that content block it is located in?  Is the link the top most link?  Is it lower on the page below other links?

  • What words (anchor text) are used to create the hyperlink that points to your page?  If it is a normal hyperlink without the rel=”nofollow” attribute, then Google will pay attention to what that anchor text is.  That anchor text can influence the relevancy of that other page it links out to.  You want your links to use relevant anchor text where possible without overdoing it.

  • Is this page that the link comes from an authoritative source on the subject?  Suppose you had a website about horses.  Ideally you would want links from other websites and web pages that are somehow related to horses.  If you had a page on your site that talked about some common illness that horses experience, then an ideal link would be from a page on a veterinarian’s website that links out to other pages about that illness.  That veterinarian would likely be considered a trusted authority figure on that topic by both humans and by search engines.
Now let’s talk about the major ranking factors that have to do with links:
4)      Domain Links – The number and quality of links pointing to your website as a whole matters to Google.  They consider a website to be more link popular if it has more links pointing to its pages.  Your website earns a reputation by earning links.  You want links from other reputable sources because that improves your own reputation.  The more reputable the websites are that link to your website makes a huge difference in how well the pages on your website tend to rank.  Generally you are better off getting at least one link from as many different trustworthy websites as possible.
5)      Page Specific Links – The number and quality of links that point directly at your page also matter for determining its ranking.   That includes links from within your own website as well as links from other websites.  If you have one particular page on your website that you want to rank really well, you can sometimes boost its ranking simply by pointing some extra links at that page from other pages within your own website.  Your homepage generally has a lot of this kind of rank boosting power.  You should link from your homepage to your most important pages on your website without overdoing it.  Generally you don’t link to more than a handful of them from your homepage.
6)       Google Quality Filters – You may have heard of the Google Panda update or the Google Penguin update.  These algorithm updates are ultimately designed with the intent to improve the quality of pages in the search results.  In some cases, they actually made the search results worse than they had been.  According to Google though, the updates were successful at increasing overall quality.
The primary purpose of the Panda series of updates by Google was to identify websites that weren’t putting enough focus on the user experience on their website.  You can read all about the Panda update on Google’s blog.  Do your best to avoid tripping the Panda filter or else your website will be severely demoted in the search results.
The primary purpose of the Penguin update by Google was to stop rewarding people who were trying to force their rankings higher in the search results by just building lots and lots of links from low quality sites using the same anchor text over and over.   If you did too much of it as a percentage of page links or site links, then your website ended up losing the high ranking it had prior to Penguin.   Lots of people who were relying on links for that extra ranking power got hit very badly by this update.
You want lots of links to your website.  Google wants you to earn lots of links for your website.  They do not want you to go build them all yourself though.  They want you to convince other people to link to your site because your site is so great.  If you get caught building lots of links because you are stamping them out like a cookie cutter, then your website can be demoted.  You have to be careful when choosing your link sources and the style of links you are getting.  You have to be very careful and selective when hiring someone to help you get links.  Don’t just outsource your link building to a spammer or you will likely end up getting your website penalized.
In order to get your pages ranking higher, you want to do as good of a job with the first five ranking factors listed here as you possibly can while avoiding tripping any quality filters or over-optimization filters like Panda and Penguin.

What About Social Media Links? I Thought Social Media Links Were The Key To High Rankings?

Social Media Websites - Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Stumble UponEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENT! (Sound of a buzzer going off)
Just about anywhere you go to read about how to get ranked higher on Google, someone is telling you that you need to get links from social media like Facebook, Twitter and the rest. This is misguided advice and I will explain why.
Links from social media can help you rank higher IF the person searching for your keywords also happens to be connected with (friends with) the person who “liked” your page. Otherwise, that “like” or “share” from their social media account is no different than a regular link from any other website. It isn’t any better than any other link and usually it isn’t as good as a link from some other website. There are many situations where Google can’t even see the spot where a person “liked” your page or linked to it from their social media account. They can only see that link if it comes from a public page. If you have to log into your account to see the link, then Google can’t see it because the Googlebot can’t log into that site.
Most of the links from social sites aren’t all that trusted anyway because it is incredibly easy for a person to build fake likes and links from them. If those links meaningfully boosted rankings, it would be a very easy system to manipulate. It would be even easier for spammers to manipulate than the current system of trust based inbound links. It is possible that a certain link from a social media site is helping boost the rankings of a certain page by a meaningful amount. But, it isn’t boosting the ranking because it is a social media site. It is boosting the ranking because that page is authoritative. It has absolutely zero to do with the fact that a page is on a social media website. – Zero
Social media links from influential people are a great way to help a page get publicity and possibly earn a few natural links from other websites that result from that publicity. That is all they are good for in terms of SEO benefit. There have been no conclusive, scientifically conducted studies that prove otherwise.
Will social media links be a larger ranking factor in the future? Maybe. I don’t think that is going to happen as soon as other SEO people seem to think it is going to happen though. Natural links from other trustworthy websites are far more important and a much more reliable way to judge quality in my opinion.

Understanding Why Your Competition Is Ranked High

Do you know why your competition is ranking higher than you?The other thing that you are going to have to learn how to do in order to achieve a number one ranking is learn how to analyze your competition. If some other page is outranking you, it will be easier to outrank them if you understand why they are ranking as high as they are.  They are ranking number one for a reason.
Suppose your page is ranking in position six in the search results for whatever keyword phrase you are targeting.  Those other five pages ahead of yours are outranking you for a reason.  Chances are that each one is outranking you for a slightly different reason.
Every page in the top ten search results on Google has already passed all the quality filters like Panda and Penguin so far.  So the reason that one page outranks another is probably because of one of those other really important factors.  Remember, the five most important are page title, words on the page, words in the URL, links pointing to the website as a whole and links pointing directly to that specific page.
All of those factors carry a lot of weight.  An easy way to think about it is if you imagine that each one of those first five categories has a score attached to it.  If you add up all five scores you have your total score.  The page with the highest total score ranks in first place.  The second highest score in second place and so on.
So you want to analyze your competition to see if they are weak in any category.  Then exploit that weakness by being better than them in that category.  Of course you will also need to make sure you are at least on an even level with them in the other categories too.   If you are strong enough in one category you can make up for weakness in other ones.
You will notice that in competitive situations, the top ranking websites all have the keywords in the page title already.  So they are already on a level playing field there.  They probably have the most important one or two keywords in the URL already.  You will also notice that they have the words on the page several times.  Having them on the page four times compared to three times helps a little bit.  It gets less and less meaningful with each additional mention of the keywords though.  So, you can’t just overpower another page by having your keywords on there more times.  In lightly competitive situations you might be able to.  In highly competitive situations, that isn’t going to work though.
In competitive situations, top rankings are usually determined by links.  The site with the most powerful links ends up winning.  This is why you hear about how important links are when you are browsing around SEO blogs and SEO forums.  Everyone wants powerful, high quality links.

So How Do You Outrank Your Competitors

businesswoman presenting a solution1)       Start by getting your page title right.  If you are targeting a four word long or longer phrase, then make that phrase your page title exactly.  That is the easiest way to convey maximum relevancy.
2)      Fix the URL for the page so that the keywords appear in it in the right order.
3)      Reshape your content on the page and make sure your primary keywords are scattered at least a few times throughout the page.  It will be a lot easier to do that if you have lots of content on the page.  If you only have a couple hundred words on the page then you are going to have a tougher time getting your keywords in there without making it look like you are stuffing them in there.  Google does not like keyword stuffing.  Add your keywords or synonyms for your keywords into the sub-headings on your page if you can.  That helps too.
4)      Get more links pointing to any page that you can on your website.  Remember that the link quality matters.  If you get higher quality links then you won’t need as many of them.  Get as many as you can though as good links are the hardest thing to get.
5)      Get more links pointing directly to the page you want to rank well.  Your homepage probably has the most link juice on your website.  So, point a link from your homepage to an inner page you want to get ranked high.  The anchor text of the link should be the exact phrase you want that page to get ranked for.  Then, also try to get other websites to link to that page too.
Don’t become overly obsessed about getting relevant anchor text with every link.   Just take the link however you can get it.   Remember that links are worth much more than just for the anchor text relevancy boost.   If you can get a link from a trustworthy source, then by all means get it no matter what anchor text it uses.
You can only get your ranking score so high by improving your on-page score such as improving the title, fixing the URL and adding good content to the page.  Beyond that you are going to have to try to get other sites to link to you.  High quality links are the big difference maker.
Study each of those factors about the pages that are currently ranking higher than you are.  Figure out how to be one step better than your competition wherever you can be and you will have figured out how to get your web page ranked number one in Google.
